Music is one of the approaches that Open Youth - Bulgaria uses to reach
its target group - The Youth. It’s a real pleasure for us because many
of our volunteers are real professionals in playing music and singing.
In relation to that we traditionally organize "NO SMOKING" shows, "Anti
AIDS" concerts, "Anti Drugs" concerts and music competitions for "St.
Valentine’s day".
We combine our music campaigns with press coverage and radio broadcasting of the events. We ask for help local and national radio stations and televisions. Of course, the press and TV coverage is always reasonably balanced although we notice that activities related to music tend to be reported more than other activities in the our campaigns.
Most of the people participating or only watching our concerts expressed the view that such campaigns were worth doing, and that they make significant achievements. These achievements can be summarized in four main directions:
For the sixth time this year we organized concert - competition "The Song of St. Valentine". The aim of the concert is to promote Bulgarian songs and to motivate the young musicians to show their art production. These events are for both young and old. This enrichment day is for couples who honor St. Valentine’s Day. The program explores the meaning and mutuality of love, using energizing new ideas about how to relate love with music. The concerts often start with amateurs performances. Afterwards there are lots of games with the public and then professionals take over the stage. We promote better, healthier ways of relating, and initiate simple and effective strategies for finding love. Concerts are extremely useful tools for fun to do and full of practical skills and information. Another aim of the concerts is charity. Every time we are donate the money from entrance to some children in urgent medical needs.
We always pay attention to the big problem "drugs". "Open Youth" believes that music can easily reach the hearts of young people and convince them to pay more attention to real things in life not to drugs. For example this year on the 26 of June (the day against drugs) one of most famous bands in Bulgaria - "Hipodil" was our guests. What we seek in our approach to combine music with our fight against the drug abuse?
we try to increase the enforcement activity against drugs dealers - young people can help in identifying and stopping the drugs spread;
"Open Youth" believes than banning smoking on school and day-care property, restricting smoking and having appropriate signage in some public places, allowing municipalities more authority to pass smoking bylaws, and providing for enforcement and penalties are useful tools but sometimes they may have the opposite effect on the rebellion type of youth thinking. It is always better to convince young people then to make them do anything against their will. And what can be better that sending them messages by the music they like. Thus we honor in our own way the "World no smoking day" on May, 31st and the "Day with no smoke" on November, 18th. Music can deliver lots and lots of messages. For example it can help in taking urgent actions to slow the spread of HIV/AIDS. Statistics show that some 8,000 young people become infected each day. Since the epidemic began in the 1970s, AIDS has claimed the lives of some 19 million people and torn apart the lives of many millions more. According to estimates from UNAIDS and WHO, 33.0 million adults and 1.3 million children were living with HIV at the end of 1999. Over 13 million children had lost one or both of their parents to the disease. On World AIDS Day, 1 December we never miss to remind the world of this treat.
