EVS community details

Image Vidin is situated in the Northwest part of Bulgaria on the bank of the river Danube. It is near the frontiers with Romania and Serbia. The town is the center of the district with a population of 45 000 people, one third of which are representatives of minority groups. The population is getting older, because the young people emigrate in order to find better opportunities for professional realization.

Vidin has a long lasting history from the times of the Roman Empire, but it is most famous for the medieval fortress "Baba Vida", which was the last Bulgarian fortress to be conquered by the Turkish army in the Middle centuries. There are also a lot of other historic sites and museums. The town used to be highly developed industrial area, but in the past decade it is declining economically and now has the highest unemployment rate in Bulgaria. Now it has very clear nature and a lot of possibilities for a quiet and fruitful volunteer work.

Vidin has a well-developed infrastructure - railways, roads (E79), and ferryboats.
